Right from the outset of the season, the first goal of Eaton’s girls basketball team was to win the programs first-ever league championship.

After crushing Franklin 75-25 last week, the Lady Eagles are just two wins away from that goal.

Eaton improved to 8-0 in the Southwestern Buckeye League’s Southwestern Division.

“We now hold a two game lead in the Southwestern Division with four games to play,” Eaton coach Gary Peffly said. “We will determine who wins the league. It’s in our control. Our goal this year was to become the first girls team from Eaton to win the Southwestern Buckeye League Championship. One game at a time.”

Eaton left little doubt who the best team was on Thursday, Jan. 16. The Eagles raced out to a 20-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. They extended their lead to 35-14 by halftime.

Any thoughts the Wildcats had of a comeback vanished in the third quarter as Eaton outscored the hosts 24-5.

Eaton got balanced scoring on the night. Danielle Karns lead the way with 16 points and four rebounds. Autumn Whirley added 15 points and three steals. Liz Tolliver scored 12 adn grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds. Hannah Paulus chipped in with 9.

“Our balance once again showed up against Franklin. Outstanding pressure defense and a very aggressive offense doomed any chance Franklin had for an upset,” Peffly said.

The night before, Eaton suffered just its third loss of the season, falling to Division I Fairfield, 48-35.

“(We) struggled against Fairfield offensively. Could not get any kind of consistency going. The girls hustled and played hard. Just a lot of things we were trying to do would not work,” Peffly said. “airfield is a large Division I school that is currently 10-3. They made us play their game. They were a very talented team that I think will have a very successful year.”

Eaton fell behind early, trailing 13-5 after the first quarter, and never recovered.

Karns led the way with 10 points and three rebounds. Tolliver added six points.

Eaton (11-4) was scheduled to play in Classic in the Country Challenge at Berlin Hiland on Monday. The Eagles fell to Division I Westerville North 48-39.

Eaton is scheduled to host Valley View on Thursday, Jan. 23, before traveling to St. Henry next Tuesday, Jan. 28.
