If it’s a Cross County Conference game, then Tri-County North is up to the task.
A non-league game at this point in the season, however, is a different story.
The Panthers upped their record to 3-0 in the CCC with thrilling 40-39 win over visiting Covington on Friday, Dec. 13, before seeing their overall mark dip to 3-2 with a 64-43 defeat at the hands of Seton Catholic from Richmond on Saturday.
North fell behind early Friday, but got its offense rolling in the second half as they overcame at 17-11 halftime deficit. North outscored the Buccs 15-6 in the third quarter.
The Panthers held a 37-30 lead late in the fourth quarter only to see Covington fight back and have a chance to tie with just under five seconds left in the game.
Senior Austin Hutchins led all scorer with 19 points, which included going 11-of-13 from the foul line. Hutchins also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
For the game, North was 16-of-20 from the foul line, while the Buccs converted on just 4-of-15 attempts.
Derek Booth added seven points for North.
On Saturday, North couldn’t overcome a slow start for the second straight night, falling behind the Cardinals 16-2 after the opening eight minutes.
Hutchins and Booth paced the way again. Hutchins scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Booth scored 11. Ryan McAdams chipped in with eight.
The Panthers were scheduled to host Bethel Tuesday, Dec. 17, before traveling to Ansonia on Friday and Xenia Nazarene Christian on Saturday.
