Illinois woman dies in Preble’s first fatal of 2014
The Preble County Sheriff’s Office last week investigated a two-vehicle, fatal crash which claimed the life of an Illinois resident.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:35 a.m.,Wednesday, Jan. 15, on U.S. 35 near Cemetery Road, west of Eaton.
The initial investigation showed Devon T. Covington, 20, of Richmond, Indiana, was traveling east on U.S. 35 in a 2005 Pontiac Vibe. His vehicle traveled left of center and struck a 2000 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Marthanne Morton, 65, of Princeton, Illinois. She was traveling westbound on U.S. 35, according to Sheriff Michael Simpson.
Morton was transported by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Simpson reported, where she died a short time later. A passenger with Morton, Mary Ann Hogan, 71, was transported to Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond. Covington was also transported to Miami Valley Hospital by ambulance. Both had non-life threatening injuries.
At press time, deputies continued their investigation into the exact cause of the crash. They do not believe alcohol was a factor.
Eaton Fire & EMS, Northwest Fire & EMS, and the West Alexandria EMS all responded to the scene.
This is the first fatal crash in Preble County in 2014.
