Tribute artist and singing impersonator Marv Reier will perform on Wednesday, March 19, from 6-8 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 501 Nation Avenue, Eaton. A special meeting, “The Basics of Dementia,” will be presented at the Preble County Senior Center by the Alzheimer’s Association Miami Valley Chapter on Wednesday, April 23, from 10 a.m.-noon Lunch will be provided. Dementia is a general term used to indicate that a person has developed difficulties with reasoning, judgment, and memory. People who have dementia usually have some memory loss and difficulty with at least one other area, such as: Speaking or writing coherently (or understanding what is said or written); Recognizing familiar surroundings; Planning and carrying out multi-step tasks. In order to be considered dementia these changes must be severe enough to interfere with a person’s independence and daily activities. Dementia can be caused by several diseases that affect the brain. The most common cause is Alzheimer disease. Alzheimer disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of all cases of dementia. The Preble County Senior Center’s Weekly Thursday Night Dances take place from 4-7 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 501 Nation Avenue, Eaton. You will enjoy country and bluegrass music by Don Pease and the Country Ramblers (Dan Waddell, Chris Norvell, Chubby Howard and John Smith). Cost of admission at the door is $3 per person or $5 per couple. Food is available for purchase. A 50/50 drawing is held. Adults of all ages are welcome to attend.
We are now accepting membership dues for 2014 at the Preble County Senior Center. There are several benefits of membership; 1) You have voting rights at the annual meeting in June; 2) You are able to rent The Gathering Place or Senior Center Great Room at a reduced rate; 3) You will receive the bi-monthly “Senior Scene” Newsletter, with all the latest information on services, activities and trip information; 4) Receive a discounted price on “Time Traveler” trips, and events and activities. (Present your membership card to receive the discounted price.) Although you don’t need to be a member to use the Council on Aging services or the Senior Center, membership is required to receive a monthly newsletter. With increased costs of printing the newsletter, processing it, and postage to mail it, we are asking our friends to help cover these costs in a small way by supporting the Council on Aging as a member. Can you volunteer a few hours to deliver meals to your neighbors? The Preble County Council on Aging provides Congregate and Home Delivered Meals to seniors in Preble County. We need volunteer back-up drivers to work about three hours a day delivering meals in their vehicle to senior citizens. You will have a dedicated route, and you can work, one, two, or more days per week, or just one day per month. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday, except holidays.
