Two separate fatal crashes which occurred in Preble County on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, are still being investigated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The first incident occurred just before 5 p.m. on Halderman Road, west of Ohio 503 in Lanier Township.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, 31-year-old Ezekiel Stayrook of West Alexandria was traveling west on Halderman Road in a Chevrolet Cavalier and veered off of the left side of the road. The vehicle struck the guardrail and skidded along until the vehicle reached the cement bridge abutment.
Stayrook was pronounced dead at the scene, according to OSP. It is believed Stayrook suffered from a medical condition, but it has not yet been confirmed, officials reported on Monday, Jan. 6.
The second crash occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Hollansburg Road, east of the Indiana state line in Jefferson Township.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, 50-year-old Brent Petry of New Paris was traveling east on Hollansburg Road when the vehicle, a Chevrolet Suburban, veered off of the right side of the road. The vehicle struck a tree, causing the vehicle to partially overturn, leaving Petry dead at the scene. Alcohol has not yet been ruled out as a cause of the incident, troopers said.
Evidence at the scene indicated that neither driver was wearing a seatbelt.
