DARKE COUNTY - Alcohol is suspected in a crash that left two local women trapped in their vehicle Monday evening near Arcanum.

According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office the women were southbound on the 3800 block of State Route 49 South when the driver lost control of the Pontiac SUV north of the Kilbourn Road intersection. The vehicle left the right side of the roadway, striking a stone, concrete decorative base in the front yard of a residence. The SUV came to rest on its driver’s side trapping the female occupants.

The driver, Christine Daugherty of Arcanum, was able to get free of the wreckage, but it took Arcanum Fire Department nearly 45 minutes to extricate the passenger, Elva Schweizer.

Both women were transported to Wayne HealthCare with non-life threatening injuries. Daugherty is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.

The crash remains under investigation at this time.
