Sign up now for Summer Reading

Through June and July, the more you read, the better your chances for prizes during the library’s Summer Reading program! With programs for kids, teens, and adults, there’s something for everyone. Sign up at your local Preble County District Library branch in Camden, Eaton, Eldorado, New Paris, West Alexandria, West Elkton, or West Manchester.

Newport Aquarium presents: Scales and Tails

Begin your epic adventure at the library! Newport Aquarium is helping kick summer reading off in a colossal way! Discover the reptilian world during this unique experience as the aquarium’s Waves on Wheels program bring some awesome animals to the library. The featured animals are a lizard, a snake and a turtle or tortoise! This program will cover the animal’s natural history, including basic facts, adaptations and specialized features these animals display to succeed in the wild.

On Thursday, June 8, the program will travel to the Eaton Library at 2 p.m. and the Eldorado Library at 4 p.m.

On Friday, June 9, see the Scale and Tails program at the Eaton Library at 10 a.m. and at the New Paris Library at 1 p.m.

Weekly Crafts

Through June and July, stop into the West Alexandria Library every Monday from 12-7 p.m. for a new weekly craft!

The Camden Library will have crafts for children every Tuesday from June 13-27 and July 11-18 at 5:30 p.m. Stop in for a chance to build edible trucks, make yummy putty, paint your own masterpiece, and more! Check the full schedule at www.preblelibrary.org under “Events.”

Gadget Magic (ages 8-12)

We’ll be creating working robots, cars, and other electronics with the library’s LittleBits electronic kits. Registration required. Stop into your library or call to register for the program. Catch Gadget Magic at:

Teens

Harry Potter Puzzle Room (teens in grades 6-12)

Someone has traveled back in time to hide one of Voldemort’s horcruxes before it can be destroyed. A locked chest in the Hogwarts library may contain your one chance to defeat the Dark Lord.

In this escape-room style puzzle game, teens are challenged to riddle their way through the clues surrounding this case. Can you solve the puzzles to unlock the chest and retrieve the horcrux before time’s up? (Registration required. Contact your library to register).

Tengwar (teens in grades 6-12)

Learn how to write your name in Elvish at the West Alexandria Library on June 7 at 3 p.m.! With a quick guide, you’ll be able to use Tolkien’s Tengwar alphabet to make everything you label a bit more magical. Plus- decorate a mini canvas! Use the script you learn, or create any design you’d like.

Cosplay Crash Course (teens in grades 6-12)

As we look ahead to a summer of fantasy and adventure, learn the basics of costume making at the Eaton Library on Tuesday, June 13 at 3:30 p.m. This crash course will give you the opportunity to brainstorm, design, and build! Feel free to bring a costume you are currently working on, pictures, patterns, or ideas. Painting and sewing services will be available as we get an early start on costumes for Halloween, cosplay, or our Summer Reading Comic Con finale!

Adults

Decorative Candy Jar

Make a decorative candy jar at the Eldorado Library on Tuesday, June 6 at 4 p.m. to spice up your home decor. All supplies will be provided. This program will also be at the West Manchester Library on Wednesday, June 14 at 4 p.m.

Jeweled Goblets

Make your own gilded and sparkling royal water goblet at the West Alexandria Library on Tuesday, June 6 at 5:30 p.m.

Basic Computer Class

We are dividing our traditional Computer Basics class into two parts at the Eaton Library. On Thursday, June 8 at 6:30 p.m., we will be talking about the very basics: what a computer is and what it does, operating systems, types of computers, essential vocabulary, and turning the computer on and off.

On Thursday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m., we’ll talk about using the mouse, what the buttons on the keyboard do (as well as some typing practice), and what you can expect to find on your computer screen.

Fantasy Book Talk

Stop by the West Elkton Library with your favorite fantasy book, and discuss it around the table with other guests and the librarians on Thursday, June 15 at 4 p.m. Who knows, you may even find a new favorite book! Coffee and tea provided.

Teacup Candles

Join us at the Camden Library on Thursday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m. to make tea-scented candles in a teacup. Be sure to register by June 1 to ensure we have enough supplies for everyone. Call (937) 452-3142 to register or stop into the Camden Library.

Eaton Library Creative Writers Group

Do you like to write? Join your fellow writers at the Eaton Library once a month for our Creative Writers Group. You don’t have to share, but you are certainly welcome to. We’ll provide writing activities and prompts for those who need a little extra inspiration. The next meeting of the Eaton Library Creative Writers Group is Thursday, June 22 at 6:30 p.m.
