Members of the Lakengren community braved the cold weather on Saturday, Jan. 18, when several participated in the second annual Polar Plunge at Lake Lakengren.

The fundraiser for the Gasper Township Fire Department is one of many featured throughout the year to raise money, as is a spaghetti dinner. All the proceeds of the fundraisers go toward the Fire Department.

This year, the Polar Plunge saw 16 brave members leap into the frozen lake, where the plungers’ clothing ranged from bikinis to shorts and a t-shirt. The temperatures reached a frigid 19 degrees while the Plunge began.

“Our community supports us unbelievably,” said Joe Hodapp, a lieutenant of the GTFD and president of the Firemen’s Association.

The department, which was founded in 2003, celebrated their 10-year anniversary last year with an appreciation dinner for the community.

“We try to keep in touch with the community, try to help them out where we can, when we can,” said Hodapp. “This kind of stuff right here just kinda helps pull the community together, unites us as one.”
