Heroin trafficking trial rescheduled

NEW PARIS — Trial for a Texas man arrested in June on heroin trafficking and other charges has been rescheduled for October.

Felix Fernando Castro, 21, was arrested after a welfare check at a Petro Truckstop ended in over $85,000 in heroin being found inside his vehicle on Thursday, June 23. Originally scheduled for last Monday, Aug. 22, jury trial in the case was rescheduled fro Monday, Oct. 17, at 8:30 a.m.

According to a Sheriff Mike Simpson, Preble County Sheriff’s deputies checked the vehicle at the truckstop off U.S. 40 in New Paris, after finding a subject asleep inside.

Deputies initiated contact with the subject to check his welfare, according to Simpson, who said Castro was found to be excessively nervous, saying he was from Texas and traveling through Ohio to find work.

A K-9 unit from the Indiana State Police alerted to the vehicle, and a probable cause search of the vehicle revealed a false compartment in the rocker panel. Deputies located approximately one kilogram of suspected heroin in the compartment.

Castro, of Mission, Texas, was charged with possession of heroin, a first-degree felony; possessing criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony, and trafficking in heroin, a first-degree felony.

PCSO deputies estimated the street value of the heroin to be in excess of $85,000. It was believed Castro was traveling to Boston with the drug.
