10-year-old motorcycle passenger killed in crash

CAMDEN — A 10-year-old died as a result of a crash on a Preble County road last weekend.

The Preble County Sheriff’s Office investigated the two-vehicle fatal crash which occurred on Saturday, July 30, at approximately 3:40 p.m. The crash occurred on Ohio 725, one mile east of Camden.

The preliminary investigation found that a motorcycle with a side car was traveling west on Ohio 725 when the driver lost control while entering a curve. The motorcycle traveled left of center and was struck by an SUV that was traveling east. In addition to the driver of the motorcycle, a passenger was seated in the side car. Both were ejected from the motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle, Daniel Muhs of Olney, Illinois, suffered serious injuries and was transported by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. His passenger who was in the side car, Joseph Muhs, 10, of Olney, Illinois, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the SUV were not injured in the crash.

Ohio 725 was closed for approximately two hours while deputies conducted their investigation. Camden-Somers Township Fire & EMS, Gasper Township Fire & EMS and the Preble County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene.
