EATON — During a Preble County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event on Thursday, Feb. 25, The Register-Herald staff celebrated a new location, new awards, and a new project for 2016.
On Dec. 14, 2015, The Register-Herald moved back to a familiar location, the Junction Village Mall. The new office is located at 532 North Barron Street in Eaton, and provides ease of access to customers who want to stop in and place their advertisements, drop off news items, or purchase their newspaper subscriptions.
Last Thursday, the R-H welcomed PC Chamber, city and county officials and fellow business leaders for a special after-hours open house complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony, door prizes, refreshments — and news.
Print is not dead. At least not in Preble County.
In a world where many publications are cutting days and paring back their print offerings, Preble County’s hometown newspaper is expanding.
Beginning Friday, April 1, after 196 years of being a weekly newspaper, The Register-Herald will add a new paid Friday edition to its portfolio of print products. Subscribers will now receive two newspapers in their mail each week — the usual Wednesday edition and the new Friday edition. Those who pick up the Wednesday edition each week will now also have the option of picking up a brand new edition on Friday. Advertisers will benefit from the increased exposure the new edition will provide. Readers will have the ability to read their hometown news while it’s fresher and not have to wait a full week.
The Register-Herald’s free Weekend Edition, a part of the Civitas Community Guide Network which is delivered to nearly 13,000 homes in Preble County on Saturdays, will be moving to a Sundays.
The additional print edition joins a news and advertising portfolio that includes the digital presence at www.registerherald.com and local behavioral and geo-targeted digital marketing opportunities.
Excitement about the new location and new edition was enhanced by the recent announcement of two new Ohio Newspaper Association Hooper Awards received on Wednesday, Feb. 17, during the annual ONA Annual Convention in Columbus.
Editor Eddie Mowen Jr., a multi-award-winning photographer and writer in his 16 years with The Register-Herald, took 3rd place in the feature photograpy category, with a photo taken at the 2015 Preble County Spelling Bee. Judges said, “How can you not smile along with the kid who just won the spelling bee? In this case, his classmate’s cheerful reaction completes the moment.”
Staff Writer Jeremy Erskine, who has been with the R-H since 2014, took home first place in the feature photo category, with a photograph he took during the 2015 Victim Witness ceremony at the Preble County Courthouse. Judges said, “The photographer captures a child’s face during a candlelight vigil for crime victims. Low lighting and the solemn moment made this a difficult shot to get.”
Recent non-newsroom accolades for the R-H Staff included longtime Media Sales Consultant Betsy Kemp’s inclusion as a Civitas top salesperson in the last Civitas Summit of Success, held in Chicago in late 2014.
