Lewisburg discusses rezoning

LEWISBURG — Lewisburg Village Council voted to change the zoning classification on a plot of land during their meeting on Monday, Jan. 7.

The land, located at 334-338 West Cumberland Street, is currently listed under an “R-1” suburban residential. The vote amended the classification to an office residential (OR), with the property slated to be turned into a restaurant.

It was the first reading of the zoning ordinance, but the council voted to waive the second and third reading, passing it in a unanimous decision.

The classification of R-1 is the most restrictive classification for a lot, only allowing large houses on large lots. The move to an OR makes the area more flexible as it combines different uses from residential to office-type business and commerce.

“We want to resurrect that building, improve it,” said Jack Dean, the applicant for the change. “Just make it a more attractive place and give them another place to have some good food service.”

In other business, council appointed Joe Bradley to the park board, Jim Peters to the zoning board, and Mary Ditmer to the planning commission. There is still one opened seat on the planning commission that has yet to be filled.

Council was also informed that there is a recreation levy that will need consideration for renewal this year. This is the third year of a five year cycle for the one-mill levy renewals, with a 2.25 mill levy for the Fire and EMS up next year, followed by a year of no renewals.

Council will need to meet after the primary election to put together an ordinance and resolution to pass and present to the county auditor for the 2016 ballot.

There was also a police resignation, as a long time officer accepted a full-time position with the Dayton Police. His resignation will be effective on Feb. 7.

The Lewisburg Village Council meets on the first and third Thursday of every month at the firehouse meeting room. Their next meeting will be on Jan. 21.
