Council on Aging delivers holiday food

EATON — In the early morning hours on a cold December morning, inside a garage at the Council on Aging, there were a number of people working. And all these workers, even without a pot of coffee in sight, were surprisingly chipper.

All these people were fully invested in holiday spirt, helping stuff buses and vans full of boxes of food to be delivered to seniors around Preble County. Around 100 elderly residents received these gift packages throughout the day on Thursday, Dec. 17.

It is part of an annual Christmas tradition at the Preble County Council on Aging, where they receive cash and food donations from businesses and citizens around the area.

“A lot of them are on a limited income, so it really helps out with their holiday meals,” said Shirley Cottingim, one of the event’s coordinators.

Each person received canned goods, macaroni and cheese, toiletries, chicken, hotdogs, bread, buns, eggs, milk, cheese, peanut butter, and several other items to get them through the Christmas season.

“Personally, I get very emotional because I think our seniors need this. I know they need it,” said Cottingim. “They’ve led long lives and they’re just very special. If we can help anybody in need, we’re glad to do it.”

The Council on Aging is located at 800 E. St. Clair St. in Eaton.
