WEST ALEXANDRIA — Superintendent Dr. Clint Moore thanked the residents of the Twin Valley Community Local School District for passage of two levy renewals on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

“It’s the best source of consumer feedback, or user feedback you can get,” Moore said of the renewals. “If you’re passing levies or renewals it means things are generally going in a positive direction and people value the services they are receiving.”

The levy, according to Moore, was a five-year renewal on a 9-mill property tax for operating expenses. Voters will continue to pay the property tax of 90 cents per every $100 of property valuation owned in the district. The levy passed with 62 percent approval.

The second renewal was Issue 14 on the ballot, requesting the renewal of 2.6-mill levy, which according to Moore costs about 26 cents for every $100 of property value. The levy passed with 60 percent approving the renewal.

Moore said the money will continue to go to the day-to-day operating expenses of the district and earlier described the renewals as “the cost of doing business.”

According to Moore, he was hopeful entering election day but says you never really know how people will vote.“You never have an overwhelming sense of confidence,” he said. “Logically you think it through and you think, ‘I don’t know what we would have done if it didn’t pass,’ it would have just gone to ballot again. We can’t run the district with less money.”

Moore was also happy to see the renewals pass with relative ease. “It was a pleasant surprise, a nice 60/40 — that kind of thing is always significant, if you get 55 or above that’s a moral victory.”

Moore was quick to thank those who voted to support the district and said his district is thankful to have such a supportive community.

”It’s always nice to be able to go back and thank people for their support,” he said. “As district leadership and staff, it sends the message that the people get it, they understand the importance of what we do. It’s not easy to go in a vote for continued taxation. It’s always such a validation when people go in and say ‘I value what you are doing’.”

The two renewals are scheduled to last five years before once again they go to voters. Moore said he was hopeful the district could combine the two levies into one eventually. He is hopeful the consolidation of the two will make it easier for voters to understand the levies and renewals.
