EATON —The Eaton Community Schools Board of Education accepted the resignation of board member Joe Renner during a board of education meeting on Monday, Nov.2.

Renner thanked the board and praised the district as a whole, saying he believes the district is in good hands moving forward.

Renner resigned from the board as he prepares to move to Eaton City Council, a position for which he ran unopposed.

“As you are aware,” he stated, “I have chosen not to seek re-election at the end of my current term. Additionally I am a candidate for Eaton City Council, and am running unopposed. This means I will take office at the city in early December, which means I must resign from the board before my term ends.”

“I have enjoyed working with the current Board very much,” he continued. “And wish you the best of luck as you continue to serve our community in this most trying position.”

Renner’s resignation will officially go into effect on on Nov. 30.

The board also approved the hiring of Rachel Tait to replace Priscilla Dodson as treasurer starting Jan. 1, 2016.

Tait, who is currently the treasurer at Twin Valley Community Local Schools, was selected from 22 applicants and received a 3 1/2 year contract through the 2019 fiscal year.

Rebecca Thompson was also hired by the board to take over as secretary to the treasurer’s office effective Monday, Nov. 16.

In other business, Superintendent Barbara Curry explained changes to the school’s calamity (snow) day system. The school will make the switch from calamity days to hours for the coming winter.

Curry also told the board students will no longer have the day off from school but will have five E-day lessons provided on the school’s website for the first five calamity days.

The first three lessons will be counted for attendance and the final two will only be counted toward grades.

According to Curry, students who do not have access to the internet will be given a two-week grace period once returning to school to complete the assignments.

An agreement with Miami Valley Career and Technology Center to create and operate the Project Lead the Way Middle School Satellite Program was also approved by the board.

According to Eaton Middle School Principal Derek Flatter, Eaton is one of three schools along with National Trail and Northmont who were selected to be pilot schools for the program.

The program is a new hands-on approach focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (or “STEM”) and will start in the junior high next school year, according to Flatter.

The board elected to alter the pay scale for substitute transportation aides to $11.75 an hour.

The board accepted the following donations: a Sharp copy machine for district use from Loudy’s Office supplies; children’s books to East Elementary from Kara Elliot, books and a monetary donation for East Elementary library from Anna Swihart, clothing to East Elementary from multiple donors, and books and a monetary donation for East Elementary Library from Jeffery Ober.
