Safety around water with the YMCA

0

PREBLE COUNTY — Summer is approaching quickly and we here at the YMCA want to make sure everyone has a safe and healthy summer! Join us for our Safety Around Water week June 5-June 9. Safety Around Water is a free water safety course for children in grades PreK-grade 6. This program is designed for non-swimmers and beginner swimmers.

Basic swimming strokes and water safety tips for a variety of water environments will be taught. Each child will receive four, 30-minute lessons and an opportunity to participate in a Family Swim on Friday, June 9.

Did you know that in 2010, there were 3,443 fatal unintentional drownings in the United States, averaging ten deaths per day. More than one in five of the fatal drowning victims were children 14 and younger. Also, for every child who dies from drowning, another four received emergency care for nonfatal submersion injuries.

In 2010, of all children 1 to 4 years old who died from an unintentional injury, almost 30 percent died from drowning. Fatal drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years.

Don’t delay — give your child this life saving skill today, because when it comes to water children are 100 percent curious.
