Camden addressing parking problems, bulk item refuse

CAMDEN — On-street parking problems were a main topic at a Thursday, May 19, meeting of Camden Village Council.

Problems with parking along Cottage Avenue, Main Street and other areas within the downtown were discussed. An observation team has mapped out areas which are becoming more dangerous and congested due to the on-street parking — and that parking may be eliminated altogether on Cottage Avenue. Lafayette Street has also been identified as more hazardous.

More information will be brought up in next month’s meeting, approaching the summer season, according to council members.

Fiscal officer Rebecca Wilson addressed a bulk item waste removal problem. Bedbugs have become a problem in Camden and Rumpke Waste has asked council to distribute flyers printed by the removal company regarding information dealing with the handling of items such as beds, furniture and other large items residents wish to throw away.

The flyers will inform the community what exactly is considered a bulk item, and what is not allowed to be discarded — such as tires. Rumpke will sell bags to the village which in turn will sell them to the public in town for use. Tires will not be allowed to be discarded and are picked up separately, during Camden’s “cleanup week”. Council approved a motion to distribute the flyer.

In other business council:

•Approved transferring sick hours for new village employee David Stump from his former public municipality employer to his employment with Camden.

•Approved a resolution concerning unpaid taxes. A legal client offered to send subpoenas to residents at a price of $8 per subpoena, charged to the council. An alternative was offered for council to send their own letters to residents delinquent on their taxes. A motion for the council to send letters was approved.

•Approved an agreement for council to attend the new “Fallen Soldier Battlefield Cross” monument dedication as requested by VFW Post 1577 on Main Street in the village

•Approved for Robert Brock, president of the Camden Lions Club, the purchase of a sign for the club to be displayed on the welcome signs on the east end of town along U.S. 127 for added visibility as is done for so many other Lions Clubs in the nation. His club has offered to maintain the sign themselves. No estimates or quotes were mentioned regarding the purchase of the sign.

•Approved a request by Jamie Garrett, vice-president of Camden Say Soccer, to use the open Water Works Park field for practices instead of using the football practice fields. The club will purchase two temporary goalie nets which will be stored on site, and use temporary paint lines that are non-toxic and wears away in a few days.

•Approved a request to finish the Water Works Park for an estimated $450, by County Line Nursery.

•Approved a request by the Camden Library to allow parking for the Gaming Rig being brought in next week.
