LEWISBURG — Another successful Derby Days weekend has come and gone, school is back in session with a new sports season started, and Labor Day 2015 is history. Labor Day is referred to as the last holiday of summer, but when you are retired, summer never ends! (Until the white stuff starts to fall, that is!)

In memoriam

Lewisburg has lost two very special people known to our community this week. Robert (Bob) Gettinger, principal of Twin Valley High School and Paije Heindel who graduated in the 2015 class at Tri-County North.

Bob Gettinger was a mentor and a friend to hundreds of high school students whose lives he touched. Even after retirement, he continued to serve the community and school district. He will be missed.

Paje Heindel passed long before her story was written but we celebrate the many memories that were shared while attending school in Lewisburg. A benefit will be held for Paje to help the family with funeral and medical expenses. This will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Lewisburg Trinity Lutheran Church. A spaghetti dinner will be served from 4-8 p.m. The cost — donations. Let’s show the family our support by attending the benefit.

Where are you guys?

Have you ever just needed a change in your routine, different scenery, maybe even no reason to get up early? Well, the three of us experienced just that this week. After a short discussion, we agreed that Columbus was at the same time close enough and far enough away to fill the bill. After a nerve-wracking delay looking for a misplaced credit card, and a return home to retrieve forgotten meds, we were off…three adults and four dogs! We never travel without our spoiled puppies, who range in age from 3 to 14. We made our necessary stop at Walmart for sodas and snacks, then were off to the hotel. We have a favorite room at this particular hotel and it was ready and waiting for us with cold water and another snack. We enjoy being spoiled a little.

We made a few shopping excursions, watched some TV and even found time for naps. Sometimes the less you do, the better the results. The highlight of our trip was a visit to Ohio Stadium, lovingly referred to as “the ‘shoe”. Since the Buckeyes first game this year is away, we were able to walk inside and take pictures. Michelle sat in one of the seats normally reserved for season ticket holders. As she looked around, with tears in her eyes, she said, “My dream has come true.” There is not a bigger Buckeye fan in this world than Michelle! She truly bleeds “scarlet and gray”.

Pay it forward

Pastor Justis, this has been an extremely hard week for you. Thank you for standing in the gap for the families involved and for being the rock that is needed in a time such as this. With all the craziness happening in the world, we learn that we have to come back to our first love and let him carry us through the fires, disappointments and the happiness that comes our way. Thank you again for representing our village and helping the healing to begin.

In closing

This article represents so many emotions and happenings. Once again it indicates that our Village can stand and face the giants no matter how big they may be. Remember: “There is spirit; there is grace in our peaceful country place.” Until next week …
