Two injured in head-on crash

ARCANUM - Part of State Route 49 South was closed down for nearly an hour Wednesday afternoon after a head-on crash injured two drivers.

Emergency personnel responded to the 2100 block of State Route 49 South just before 1 p.m. on a reported crash with injuries involving two vehicles.

According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, a 2002 Jeep, driven by Michael C. Adkins, 23, of Greenville traveling southbound, just north of Meadow Lane, when he attempted to pass several vehicles. Adkins was still in the left lane when he was coming up on a 2013 Ford commercial van, driven by Michael E. Wysong, 52, of New Lebanon, who was northbound. Wysong attempted to swerve to the right side of the road to miss Adkins’ vehicle, but both vehicles struck head-on off the east side of the road.

Adkins was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by Arcanum Rescue with serious injuries, including a possible broken leg. Wysong was taken to Wayne HealthCare by Greenville Township Rescue with non-life threatening injuries.

Charges are pending an investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. Darke County deputies, Pitsburg Fire and Arcanum Rescue responded to the scene of the accident. Mutual aid was requested from Greenville Township Rescue and Tri-Village Rescue.
