Tri-County North had no real answer for Versailles’ combination of inside and outside scoring in the second round of the Bellbrook Division III Boys Sectional Basketball Tournament last week.
The Panthers saw their season come to an end with a 50-38 setback on Tuesday, Feb.25.
It wasn’t a flawless game for Versailles as the Tigers had some unforced turnovers, but the overall talent of third-seeded Versailles was too much for 15th-seeded Tri-County North.
Tri-County North (8-15) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on baskets by Hunter Gleadell and Austin Hutchins. From there, Versailles took control.
The Tigers went on an 8-0 scoring run with Jacob Wenning, Jace Barga and Kyle Rutschilling to take a lead they held the rest of the game. Baskets by Ryan Knapke and Brett McEldowney then had Versailles leading 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Versailles got an inside presence in the second quarter from Evan Phlipot, who scored six points in the period, while Nick Campbell, Barga and Brett McEldowney added scoring to give the Tigers a 29-18 halftime lead.
The Panthers were able to cut Versailles’ lead to five points in the third quarter, but the Tigers’ got their advantage back to 12 points at 43-31 by the end of the period.
The teams played even in the fourth quarter.
Hutchins led Tri-County North with a game-high 15 points while Gleadell scored 10, Garrett Woodyard scored six, Derek Booth scored five, and Brad Hornbeck scored two.
