Maddie Woodard scored 23 points and Adrianna Moore added 19 as Preble Shawnee’s girls basketball team opened sectional tournament play with a 57-52 win over Southwestern Buckeye League rival Milton-Union.
The game was played Monday, Feb. 10, at Tippecanoe High School.
With the win, the Arrows advance to the second round where they were scheduled to play No. 2 seed Versailles on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
If Shawnee (13-8) beats Versailles they will play for a sectional championship Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Tipp.
The Arrows jumped out to an 11-8 lead after the first quarter and led 28-21 at the half. They extended the lead to 42-29 after three. Milton-Union rallied to make the game close at the end.
Woodard finished with nine steals and four rebounds. Moore grabbed 12 rebounds and collected seven steals.
Allison Began scored six, while Elise Walker chipped with seven points and pulled down six rebounds.
The win over the Bulldogs was the third this season for Shawnee, who won the earlier meetings 70-52 and 48-42.
The win also gave the Arrows a nine-game winning streak.
That streak was snapped when the Arrows fell to visiting Dixie, 55-44, in the regular-season finale Saturday, Feb. 15.
Shawnee held a 10-9 lead after the first quarter, but fell behind 28-20 at the half.
Woodard led the Arrows with 15 points and five steals. Moore scored 10 and grabbed eight rebounds. Walker tallied eight points and grabbed six rebounds. Riane Woodard pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and Began scored seven.
Tri-County North saw its season come to an end Saturday with a loss to No. 4 seed Southeastern, 64-24, in the Division IV sectional at Brookville. The Panthers fell behind early, 18-2 and trailed 40-7 at the half. Megan Duffy paced North with six points.
The Panthers end the season with a 5-18 record.
Blazers drop pair
National Trail closed out its regular season playing two of the better teams on its schedule.
The Blazers fell to county foe Eaton, 61-38, on Monday. The next night, Trail went scoreless in the first quarter against Cross County Conference champion Miami East and never recovered in suffering an 81-28 setback.
The Blazers were scheduled to play No. 3 seed Anna on Monday, Feb. 17 in the opening round of the Division III sectional at Tipp. If the Blazers win, they would play for the sectional title on Thursday at 6 p.m.
