With a majority of his squad competing for the first time in a sectional tournament, Eaton wrestling coach Mark Silvers wasn’t sure what to expect.
Any doubts the veteran coach may have had about his team were gone by the end of the tournament.
Eaton soared by its competition in the Tippecanoe 2 Division II Sectional on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15, as it won a sectional championship and advanced 10 wrestlers to the district tournament.
Eaton tallied 241 points. Host Tippecanoe was second with 171 points and Carroll was third with 159.5.
The Eagles will compete in the Division II District at Bowling Green’s Stroh Center Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. each day.
“We went in with a lot of questions about our team with ten of the fourteen competing in their first sectional tournament,” Silvers said. “They rose to the occasion and wrestled tough the entire meet.”
Freshman Coleman Foster was the first of four individual champions for the Eagles as he improved his season record to 23-8 by winning a sectional title at 106 pounds. Foster defeated Logan Carr of Bellbrook by pin in 1 minutes, 44 seconds.
Mac Altom took Eaton’s second title by winning at 120 pounds. The freshman improved to 23-8 on the season as he defeated Caleb Houser of Ben Logan, 16-11, in the final.
Third-seeded Blake Sittloh (24-11) pulled of a pair of upsets in claiming the 132-pound title. He beat second-seeded Mitchell Poynter of Tippecanoe in the semis, 8-2, then beat top-seed Chase Wilcoxon of Bellefontaine by pin in 37 seconds in the championship match.
Matt Todd (22-10) rounded out Eaton’s four titles with a pin of No. 1 seed Shane Dodd of Tipp in 48 seconds in the final.
Aldin Leaker reached the championship match but came up short in his bid for a title, falling to top-seed Cole Smith of Tipp, 13-11. Leaker, the third-seed, reached a milestone in the tournament as he claimed his 100th career victory with a pin over second-seeded Nathan Bills of Northwestern in the semifinals.
Shane Helsinger placed second at 182 pounds. Helsinger lost to No. 1 seed Joe Rindfleisch 7-6 in the final match.
Also advancing for Eaton was Drew Moore, who placed third at 152 pounds, freshman Noah Herzog who placed fourth at 113 pounds, Levi Gilbert who took fourth at 170 pounds, and Shane Hammock who was fourth at 285 pounds.
Also placing but not advancing was Branson Bennett (15-18) who was fifth at 138 pounds, Logan Islamovsky (12-13) who took fifth at 220 pounds, and Brandon Weaver (20-15) who placed sixth at 126 pounds.
“Now we get back to practice to build on our strengths and improve our weaknesses,” Silvers said. “Winning a sectional title took a great team effort and this group did a great job. Now we build for the district meet at Bowling Green.”
