MIAMI COUNTY — Three people sustained injuries following a car versus dump truck crash on East U.S. Route 36 at Union-Shelby Road on Thursday morning.

The crash occurred shortly after 9 a.m. when a compact car, southbound on Union-Shelby Road, pulled into the path of a large dump truck that was eastbound on U.S. Route 36. The truck struck the car broadside on the passenger side. The impact drove the truck partially over the top of the car, pinning both the vehicle and occupants.

Rescue crews from Piqua and Fletcher fire departments worked to extricate two victims from the car. CareFlight was requested but was unable to fly due to weather conditions.

The victims in the car have been identified as Colin Hawes, 17, and his sister Katlyn, 13. Both are students at Miami East. Colin is a senior at the high school and his sister a seventh-grader at the junior high school. They were on their way to school when the crash occurred. Miami County deputies said that both are currently in ICU at Children’s Medical Center. Their conditions have not been released.

A crash reconstructionist from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office was called in to assist in the crash investigation. We will have more information as it becomes available.
