Retirement

On Tuesday, Dec. 10, longtime council member/mayor and fire board member Fred Specht will retire after serving the community since the early 1970s. A recognition will take place for him at the West Elkton council meeting at 7 p.m. at the municipal building next to the library in West Elkton. Also that evening, Charlie Howard will be recognized for his service as zoning board chairman. All are welcome to attend and show your thanks.

New inspector

Aaron Forrer of Camden was recently hired by the state fire marshal’s office as field inspector for Montgomery and Preble Counties. Forrer, who is presently fire inspector for the Camden and Somers Township Fire Department will keep those duties as well as volunteer for the fire department and work with the EMS for Camden and the City of Eaton. Congratulations, son!

Toy drive

The annual toy drive sponsored by the Gratis Township and West Elkton Fire Association is under way. A nice bunch of items were donated recently by patrongs at Bogg’s Auction Barn on U.S. 127 in Camden. If you would like to donate new toys this holiday to help out families in our area, contact Terry Roberts at 937-787-3815 or the fire house at 937-787-3713. Boxes are located in area businesses as well for your convenience.

Breakfast

Don’t forget the Rebekah Lodge in Camden on South Main Street has breakfast the first and second Saturdays of each month from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The cost is $5 for eggs, sausage, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, and pancakes. Take your family out and enjoy a nice homemade breakfast.

Oops

In last week’s Scoop, we reported the new Dollar General store was open for business in Gratis. Although true, some of the information reported was inaccurate. The distribution center hit by the tornado was in Marion, Indiana, and product was rerouted from Scottsville, Kentucky, not Louisville and Illinois as reported. Store hours for the new store will always be 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day and does not change for the holidays. Our sincere apologies for the misinformation.

Memorial service

As reported, the memorial service for our aunt Pam (Newman) Snyder will be Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. at Heartland of Eaton. In last week’s memorial, Pam’s husband Larry Snyder and son Danny were reported as grandchildren. Pam is also survived by two grandchildren.

Shop local

Don’t forget as the holiday arrives, to shop all of our local businesses in the Scoop area. It’s our businesses that help keep our communities viable. So don’t forget to shop smart and shop local.

Free meal

The free “Gratis” Church of the Brethren meal this month will be on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. This month will feature a traditional Christmas ham dinner with all the fixins. The church is located at the corner of Ohio 503 and Mack Street. Come enjoy food and fellowship.
